Contractors have started clearing a small patch of trees on Rt 47 (Delsea Drive) in Deptford ahead of construction of a new Dollar General store.
The location on Rt 47 is very close to exit 25 interchange of Rt 295, which many consider to be Westville but it’s actually Deptford. The town line as you drive down Delsea Drive actually changes as you cross the bridge over 295.
This is an all construction, free standing Dollar General store. I would expect it to look similar to the one opened a few miles South on 47 in Washington Township near “5-Points”.
Dollar General Location, Location, Location
This Deptford Dollar General location will be next to a Puff-N-Go convenience store that still has that distinctive “7-11” style to it, and the large Chestnut Lane apartment complex is directly behind. And the newer Victory in Christ Christian center is directly across the street.
Honestly the location could be a good on for Dollar General and the community.
I spent most of my life living not too far away in Bellmawr and I know the area very well.
The surrounding area was built out with homes not too long after the end of World War II and for the most part, it’s densely populated with single family homes, apartments.. well just a lot of people live close by.
And while Brooklawn and it’s ShopRite isn’t too far away.. there really aren’t any pharmacies or other decent sized stores to pick-up that random thing you find yourself needing
“Dad can you blow up my basketball? Mom do we have any carpet cleaner?”… and it’s off to Dollar General you go to buy a pump needle and cleaner.
Approved Last Year
Dollar General appeared before Deptford Planning Board less than a year ago. We brought the news to 42Freeway readers back in October of 2021.
The store will be a new 10,640 square foot retail building, which seems to be a common footprint now for their stores in our area.
The Dollar Generals developed for Washington Township and Runnemede are the same 10,640 sq ft and we would imagine this is a carbon copy.
While many complain about Dollar Generals coming to their town “WE WANT A TRADER JOE’S!” it seems many are shopping at the DG.
The New York Times reported on Dollar General’s most recent quarterly earnings reports, and revenue is up 9%. It was attributed to shoppers looking for discounts as inflation price increases impact the consumer wallet , and also because the sell price of goods overall have gone up.
Dollar General’s stock price is up over 200% in the past 5 years.
Like I said… a lot of people are shopping there!
