CVS – Washington Township Johnson Rd & BHP

The big surprise seems to be the CVS pharmacy closing in Washington Township, located at the intersection of the Black Horse Pike and Johnson Rd (Across Johnson is the Whitman Diner)

In my visit yesterday, closing signage was not displayed yet but employees were actively telling customers of the June 5th closing.

The pharmacy staff is volunteering the closing information to customers who visit or call, and providing guidance to customers regarding which other CVS locations they should direct their prescription fulfillment needs to.

CVS Pharmacy in Washington Twp is closing

No reason for the closing has been given yet by CVS, but staff at the pharmacy were stating the general “Corporate Answer” of a variety of factors including revenue and customer volume.

There are no announced plans for the building at this time, and likely the building will be put up for lease to find a new tenant. Locals may remember that in the 1990s the property was home to Rib-It Restaurant.

In general the retail pharmacy industry is struggling to boost and hold up profits particularly after seeing large revenue growth during the pandemic.

Earlier this year CVS announced that it was closing several dozen locations within Target stores although I do not know at this time which South Jersey locations were impacted.

Searching recent news reports I can see that CVS pharmacies around the country are closing around this time, with closings announced in Iowa, Upper East Side NY, Oklahoma City, Columbus OH and other areas.

This is the second tough closing for the immediate community as earlier this month a TD Bank closed.

Additionally, NJDOT right now is starting a $72 Million project to rebuild Route 42 through Washington Twp, which will be a multiple year effort.

RiteAid Berlin, Marlton, Pennsauken

RiteAid is going through a well publicized voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding, where part of that plan is to reduce costs and close up to 500 stores.

In February of this year I reported on the closing of RiteAids in Gloucester Township and Haddon Township. In October I reported on closings of stores in Mullica Hill, Mantua, Williamstown and Lumberton.

And now for this month (so far) we have locations in Berlin, Marlton and Pennsauken announced as closing.

Every aspect of the RiteAid bankruptcy closing procedures are chronicled at Kroll.com including store closing announcements.  Once a location makes that list RiteAid wastes no time with the closing sales, and the store closing signage goes up as early as that same day and typically no later than the next morning.

As an example, the Marlton store closing appeared on bankruptcy documents in the afternoon of April 9th, and the very next morning popular Facebook Evesham area commercial news page “A View From Evesham” already had photos of the store online with the “Store Closing” signage in place all over the windows, building and property. This Marlton store is in a busy commercial section where Maple Ave. Church Road, and Greentree Rd. all meet to form a triangle shaped commercial property.

Pennsauken RiteAid Maple Ave Closing (Image: Google Maps)

The Pennsauken Rite Aid is located near the corner of Haddonfield Road and Maple Ave, which is very close to the Pennsauken Country Club and less than a mile from the Cherry Hill Mall.

The Berlin RiteAid closing was just announce a couple days ago. It sits on the White Horse Pike but right at that busy intersection where multiple roads meet; White Horse Pike, Jackson Rd, Tansboro Rd. and Berlin-New Freedom Road.   This is the downtown section of Berlin and CVS is just a few blocks away from the Berlin Diner.
