The TD Bank branch on the Black Horse Pike at Ganttown Road in Washington Township (Gloucester County) is set to close on April 5th, 2024. This is the TD Bank in front of the Ganttown Plaza, where Harbor Freight, Fun City and Motor Vehicle offices are operating.
There were no details provided regarding the closing of this TD Bank branch. TD Bank maintains two other locations in Washington Township as well as surrounding communities.
According to my research this would be the first TD Bank branch to close in New Jersey since 2021… when about a dozen TD Banks locations closed that year.
Signage at the TD Bank branch in Ganttown Plaza directs customers to utilize other area locations after the closing, including:
- Hurfville Cross Keys Rd. : Across from the Washington Township high school
- Egg Harbor Rd & Gannttown : Rita’s Water ice and Dollar Tree center
- Cross Keys Road Gloucester Township: between the Shoppes at Cross Keys Shoppign Center and Sicklerville Rd
I would imagine proximity to other locations and ease of access are factors in deciding which locations should be closed.
Locals will likely call out that a few recent years ago another TD Bank branch closed on Black Horse Pike at the intersection of Cross Keys Rd. I had been told unofficially by former employees that the “Across from Sam’s Club” branch of TD Bank had closed due to low customer activity and deposits.
Likely this Ganttown Plaza location is simply part of an ongoing “tightening of the belt” taking place throughout the US retail banking industry, where underperforming locations (or more costly locations) are being closed.
At this time I do not know of any plans for the TD Bank building, but more than likely nothing is set to immediately come in.
In Washington Township it’s an unfortunate loss for the extended Ganttown Plaza shopping center, which had recently seen the opening of the popular Fun City Adventure Park, as well Embellish Events.
Because I know people will ask, a Raising Cane’s Chicken finger restaurant is planned for directly across the street from this TD Bank property, at the former Pep Boys. I’ve heard unofficially from folks in Washington Township municipal offices that plans are still moving forward with Raising Cane’s in Washington Twp, and the developers are simply working through all of the additional approvals, including those from other government agencies. It’s location on a NJ State Highway (rt 42) and also a Gloucester County Highway (Ganttown Rd) could mean it needs their approvals also.
US Retail Banking Industry Consolidations
The US Retail Banking industry continues to shut down branches in numbers that haven’t been seen since the big financial crisis in 2008!
An article at Kiplinger last fall stated that in 2022 there were 3,000 branches closed that year in the USA! Another article at American Banker states that through the first 10 months of 2023, another 2,100 branches closed.
In other parts of South Jersey, recently there are a few other area banks which have been impacted by closings recently… either already closed, or scheduled to close. (According data available at the Office Of The Comptroller)
- Citizens Bank 501 E. Evesham Rd Runnemede (Inside Acme)
- PNC 500 Monmouth St, Gloucester City
- PNC 528 Station Ave, Hadden Heights
- Wells Fargo E. Clementon Rd, Gibbsboro
- Wells Fargo 4523 Church Rd, Mount Laurel
