The famed Macy’s department store brand has opened a new location in Mount Laurel NJ, which is a smaller sized store but still carrying a large array of product from all of their core departments.
The Mount Laurel location is in the Centerton Square Shopping Center where Wegmans, Costco and Topgolf are located. Macy’s takes over the former Bed, Bath and Beyond unit.
This new smaller store model of 30-50,000sf is intended to extend the Macy’s experience into new marketplaces, and driving additional revenue for the brand.
In many areas consumers are moving away from the larger shopping mall experience and heading to power centers instead such as Centerton Square.
A second South Jersey small-format Macy’s is set to open in Cherry Hill soon in the Route 70 Market Place at Garden State Park complex. An interesting twist to that opening is there is already a full Macy’s department store about a mile-and-a-half away at the Cherry Hill Mall.
Indications from Macy’s so far is that both Cherry Hill locations can operate successfully.
In February Macy’s announced they are closing about 150 underproductive locations through 2026. By the end of their current fiscal year, 50 stores will be closed. There’s been no announcement of which locations. The closings will be targeted at the 25% of their locations that collectively represent only 10% of their sales.
Macy’s Mount Laurel
I was at the ribbon cutting ceremony this morning and had a chance to walk through the store to see what this new small format shopping experience was about.
Honestly they seem to have done a very good job of providing a wide selection of items from all of their key departments such as women’s, men’s, children’s and a large cosmetics area.
Additionally, don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s a smaller store not in a shopping mall… everything about my visit felt like a true full Macy’s experience!
Which fits their goal of bringing the Macy’s shopping experience to other communities where they feel the brand will be very successful, but there just aren’t any large shopping malls there.
They followed the industry pattern of polishing the old concrete floor, but all other aspects of the build-out have a Macy’s level of design, decor and care to them such as perimeter walls offering colored panels and interesting graphics, nice shelving throughout the store… and a significant investment in the cosmetics area
This may not surprise you but I’m not a big cosmetic purchaser… but they’ve done a really nice job of building out a higher-end shopping experience for makeup, cosmetics and perfumes. The allocated space is large enough that individual brands have their own dedicated sections including Lancome and Estee Lauder.
At this point I do not have an opening date for the Cherry Hill location, but will be there when they open!
