One year and a day after Gloucester Township approved a new LIDL grocery store in Blackwood, construction crews arrived today to start the site preparation work ahead of full construction. Before the day was out several trucks were onsite, and dirt was already being moved into a dumptruck.
We posted previously ahead of last year’s Planning Board meeting, and after the approval.
This new LIDL location is on the Black Horse Pike at the Lakeland Road intersection. The Sam’s Bar shopping center is diagonally across from the LIDL property.
The workers had quickly put up the temporary low silt fencing in the back corner of the property where the LIDL building will be located, and as mentioned… in the farthest corner a backhoe was already digging up dirt and dumping it into a waiting dump truck
We do not have any estimates on the construction completion.
LIDL is Growing in South Jersey, Blackwood Improves
LIDL is a German based supermarket chain, with a model similar to Aldi.
Lidl recently opened new stores in Cherry Hill, and Glassboro. They were also recently approved in Somerdale but last we drove by, there was no major construction taking place. Years ago a larger store was opened in Vineland.
They are opening and planning new stores all over New Jersey. New stores have also opened recently in Belleville, Elmwood Park, Garwood, Bergenfield…with others planned for Edison and other areas.
I really should start menu sections for Wawa, LIDL and the Dollar Stores!
This Blackwood store was approved as a 31,000 sq ft brand new building, with all new parking and lighting.
Over the years this corner property has been cleared of all of the buildings. The LIDL store will be taking a big portion of the visible cleared lot, but not all of it.
The property will run to the traffic light intersection and will go as far down the Black Horse Pike to end across from the Heritage Dairy Store. This will leave a decent sized portion of the cleared property. We believe the same property owner own’s most of the land on the same side of the pike, and it’s reasonable to think additional development could follow.
Lakeland Road heading into the Lakeland area of town is a County Road (CR-747) and because of this, Camden County also had to approve this project… which they did in the fall.
Reading the County planning documents, it appears that the LIDL project will widen Lakeland road by 5.25 feet on the side fronting the LIDL Supermarket (Lakeland Rd).
An entrance will be located on Black Horse Pike in line with Fairmount Rd, and another entrance will be on Lakeland Rd close to the edge of the end of the project property.
For a very long time this area of Blackwood.. South portion of Old Blackwood… has been in dire need of investments, and over the last 6 years or so things are really turning around.
The large Gloucester Premium Outlets opened in 6 years ago, just a large block away from this new LIDL. The outlet mall project has room for 90 stores, and costs multiple 10s of millions of dollars.
A free standing Dave and Buster’s Arcade restaurant opened just this year, located between Rt 42 and the Outlets.
While of a smaller scale, just this week we announced that The Shoppes at Gloucester (opposite corner of LIDL) are continuing their upgrades with the addition of a Dollar Tree and additional building work.
And if you drive by to check all of the new stores or construction progress, be sure to stop in at the new Blair Mountain Biscuit Company! Home made biscuits, sandwiches and sausage!
We are excited for this project and we will provide regular updates!
