Freddy’s Steakburgers Opens In Burlington Twp.  I Visited For Lunch
Reading Time: 5 minutes

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers opened this week in Burlington Township NJ in a new complex of restaurants and retail stores along Mount Holly Road between the Route 295 and the NJ Turnpike exits.

A second Burlington County location broke ground in Cinnaminson last week and will open later this year, with more planned!

While the full restaurant name puts custard first… the logo hints to the fact that Freddy’s is best described as a cooked-to-order “smashed” style hamburger restaurant which also features other amazing entrees such as hot dogs and chicken sandwiches.

And yes, amazing Frozen Custard also which is prepared in a very unique and tasty way!

You’ll likely just call them Freddy’s. And you’ll also likely call them… delicious!

Inside, the Freddy’s interior brings you back to a fun 1950s dining experience with checkered flooring, white walls, and the bright red accents of the mid-century diner style seating, light fixtures and overhead exposed ductwork.

With food cooked fresh for each order and a fun dining room experience, the entire family will love visiting Freddy’s… but don’t forget to bring Grandmom and Grandpop along who are sure to get an extra kick out of the nostalgic stylings!

Freddy’s Steakburgers Comes to South Jersey

The day after the grand opening I caught up with franchise owner Brian Bowman at his new Burlington location, who tells me he is signed on for six locations focused in the Burlington county area and possibly slightly beyond.  Besides the upcoming Cinnaminson location, his other four locations have not been chosen yet.

By the way Brian and his family (wife Janet and 4 children) are locals, living in Burlington County!

If you are unfamiliar with Freddy’s, they have over 450 locations in 35 states. While they are new to South Jersey side of the Delaware River, there are a few Freddy’s locations on the Pennsylvania side.

Brian has a lifelong career in the restaurant industry but tells me he only became aware of Freddy’s just a few years ago during his family’s many trips to Pennsylvania for his kid’s ice hockey tournaments.

Being in the industry and first seeing a Freddy’s, Brian had to stop and check it out. Freddy’s quickly became a family favorite, which lead to him signing on as a franchise operator!

During my visit I got to meet the entire Freddy’s Burlington team including General Manager Darlene as well as Brian’s partner Paul Merlino.

Even though the restaurant offers a classic 1950s dining experience, I was also very impressed by the technology going on in the kitchen which is focused on getting fresh food to customers fast and accurately.

For their smashed steakburgers they use a multiple grill approach where the “smashing” into thin patties utilizes a mounted arm to press down on the grill, before moving on to a second grill.

The burgers and other food items move down a line of multiple workers who utilize computer screens to tell them exactly how to prepare each item… visually!  It actually will actually depict bacon, lettuce or whatever the ingredient that is needed to go on to the item!

The custard is also an interesting design as it is created like a soft serve machine but it continuously comes out into containers. When custard orders are placed the Freddy’s staff scoops the ice cream!

Freddy’s Steakburgers Burlington – Menu

Brian had no idea I was stopping in at the time, but as soon as I introduced myself he immediately made time for me. This lead to a tour of the restaurant, meeting all of the staff and my having lunch with both Brian and Paul.

For lunch we started with a Freddy’s Original Double. Keep in mind that these are thinner “smashed” steakburger patties so likely most customers are going with the double.

The steakburger patties are fresh high quality beef which gets a dash of Freddy’s secret seasoning. The standard preparation is cheese, mustard, onion and pickles on a toasted bun but you can change it up however you like.

Freddy’s uses a thin shoestring french fry that is 100% potato. No coatings on the crispy fries.

Freddy’s offers two Famous Fry sauces… the famous fry sauce is a tangy twist on ketchup, and the jalapeno fry sauce adds a little extra spice.   The sauces are perfect for dipping your fries, or adding to any of the sandwiches.

I am a big fan of the Freddy’s steakburger and it’s thin patty cooking style!  A savory blend of ingredients in a very fresh bite.

Next we tried a Chili Cheese Dog which is an all beef hot dog topped with chili, shredded cheese and diced onions on a toasted bun.   A perfect combination of flavors which would be right at home at an classic boardwalk hot dog stand.

I then bit into the Freddy’s Original Patty Melt which is 2 steakburger patties, but switches things up with swiss cheese and grilled onions on toasted rye bread!  Amazing!

Somehow I had room for dessert… first was their signature Turtle Custard which is fresh and creamy vanilla custard, hot fudge, hot caramel and toasted pecans.   The frozen custard really is amazing as the texture is sort of between soft serve and harder scooped ice cream… with an amazing fresh vanilla taste.

I then tried the Chocolate Brownie Delight served in a “Concrete” style which features fresh and creamy chocolate custard, brownie and hot fudge, The chocolate flavors together are… dangerously delicious!

A big thank you to Brian, Paul, Darlene and the team.. and good luck at your new Freddy’s locations!
