I-295 Exit Ramps at Route 73 Reopen Saturday After Gas Main Work Completes

NJDOT announced the reopening Friday night. The closures affected I-295 southbound Exit 36A to Route 73 southbound and I-295 northbound Exit 36B to Route 73 northbound. Both ramps had been closed since late July.

PSE&G’s work involved a gas main along Route 73 where it crosses over I-295. The repair effort took longer than originally expected. In an earlier update to 42Freeway, NJDOT said severe weather and unexpected equipment problems had slowed the work. After the gas main repairs were complete, crews still needed to finish paving and reconstruct the median barrier. 42 Freeway

Drivers may have noticed lane closures Friday night as crews removed barriers and restriped the roadway ahead of the reopening. With the ramps open Saturday morning, motorists can once again use the direct connections from I-295 to Route 73, ending the detours that had been in place throughout the project.

The reopening comes sooner than the roughly two-week estimate NJDOT provided in its September 18 update. 42 Freeway
