Flaming Grill & Modern Buffet is coming to the Locust Grove Plaza in Deptford, in a location which up until a few years ago was home to Tokyo Hibachi & Sushi Buffet.
UPDATE: This restaurant is opening on September 20th as… Umi Sushi & Seafood Buffet.
The plaza is the angled white and blue strip mall at the corner of Clements Bridge Rd and Almonesson Rd. The Cannabist dispensary is a recent addition to the center.
For the new buffet this will be no simple “dust off the interior” effort.
While today the front windows at the Deptford location are freshly papered over ahead of the interior construction project, when I stopped by on October 10th the windows were clear and I could easily see inside.
And inside… the entire space was gutted down to the support beams and hanging duct work. A collection of kitchen equipment was in one area.
So basically this will be a “ground up” new buffet restaurant.
From my research I can see the overall experience of the upcoming buffet will seem familiar, with the expansive buffet of appetizers, entrees, dessert… including sushi and crab legs.
BUT, Flaming Grill promises all fresh food delivered daily.
Honestly the pandemic took it’s tool on area buffets and it will be nice to have a high quality one back in the Deptford area.

Flaming Grill & Modern Buffet
The documents I have for the new Flaming Grill location list the address for the Locust Grove Shopping Center in Deptford as the location.
The mailing address is listed to their East Hanover NJ location, which opened just last month.
In a story about the East Hanover Flaming Grill location written by Marilyn Johnson at Newsbreak.com, she describes the them as a family friendly restaurant offering seafood, hibachi, American, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine.
They receive fresh food 6 days a week (except Sundays)… while many other buffets use frozen food!
Factor in that Flaming Grill has over 350 delicious items to choose from each day, it’s quite a logistical effort bringing all of the food, unpacking, cooking a serving… all in the same day!
With 39 locations across the country, the East Hanover location was their first in New Jersey.
Marilyn’s Newsbreak article goes on to say they have eight more planned for New Jersey, and seemingly Deptford is in that mix.
Both the East Hanover and upcoming Deptford locations are approximately 10,000 sq ft so I would expect the Deptford location also to seat up to 400 persons (as does East Hanover)
Not a lot on this story right now, but you know I’ll have more as the restaurant gets closer to opening.
