Aubuchon Ace Hardware Coming to Former Rite Aid in West Deptford

The former Rite Aid at 1000 Kings Highway in West Deptford appears to be getting a new life as an Aubuchon Ace Hardware store.

This is where Kings Highway, Parkville Rd and Grove Rd all meet. At the extended intersection are Truist Bank, Dunkin, G’s Liquor Gallery and a newer Heritage’s Dairy Store.

For the Rite Aid property, workers have been on site the last week or so, and when I stopped by today, two dumpsters were outside for crews who have been clearing out the former pharmacy’s interior. Several readers had also messaged me in recent days asking what was coming to the building, after noticing the activity.

The strongest clue is in the hiring activity: Aubuchon has posted openings for a new store in West Deptford, including a retail store leader, an assistant store leader and an experienced sales associate. The listings point to an Ace Hardware operated by the Aubuchon Company. An Ace Hardware location page also appears to be in development, although it currently displays an error when opened. I’m familiar with Ace Hardware from visiting the Turnersville store regularly (different ownership), but the Aubuchon name was new to me.

It turns out the Massachusetts-based company has been in the hardware business since 1908. Aubuchon describes itself as a fourth-generation family company with more than 100 retail locations across several hardware store brands. Its goal, the company says, is to keep the feel of a neighborhood hardware store while competing as a modern retailer. Hardware Store Retailing Since 1908

Aubuchon already has a South Jersey connection. In 2024, it acquired Anco Ace Hardware in Villas, Cape May County, and said that store would retain the Anco Ace name. I think I may have rented a U-Haul truck from that location years ago!

The Kings Highway store should be a useful addition for nearby neighborhoods and the surrounding business parks. There isn’t a Walmart or Target in the immediate area for a quick household or hardware purchase, although Home Depot on Route 45 is several minutes away.

Aubuchon Hardware Stores

Aubuchon has been expanding well beyond its original New England base. The Worcester Business Journal reported earlier this year that the company aims to triple in size by its 125th anniversary in 2033. The publication’s 2026 business listings put Aubuchon at about 2,100 employees and $430 million in annual revenue.

There is no announced opening date for West Deptford. The work inside the former Rite Aid and the hiring for store leadership positions suggest preparations are underway, but they don’t establish when customers will be able to shop there. I’ll keep an eye on the property and share an update as the new store takes shape.
