Plaza Azteca Expanding in South Jersey: Voorhees and Marlton Coming Soon

Plaza Azteca Expanding in South Jersey: Voorhees and Marlton Coming Soon

Plaza Azteca is a popular Mexican restaurant and bar in Sicklerville NJ, and they are expanding into two new South Jersey locations… Voorhees and Marlton.

42Freeway worked with popular Facebook page “A View from Evesham” (Facebook) on this story. Neil at AVFE initially found solid clues for the new Marlton location, and 42Freeway learned of plans for Voorhees and confirmed both with local management. (AVFE Facebook post here)

Plaza Azteca in Sicklerville has large tents setup for their Cinco de Mayo celebration! New locations coming to Voorhees and Marlton

Recently management at the Sicklerville location started sharing the exciting news with loyal customers about the expansion plans, mentioning both Marlton and Voorhees.

A loyal 42Freeway reader reached out to me with this news, and I found that the Plaza Azteca website has already been updated to show a Voorhees location Coming Soon to the Boulevard Shops at the Voorhees Town Center!   (although I want to say the listed building address is incorrect)

So doing the hard undercover journalism I am famous for, on Friday my wife and I stopped in at the Sicklerville location for a delicious dinner and chatted with the local management… who further confirmed the upcoming Voorhees and Marlton locations.

It’s a very smart move for the Mexican restaurant group Plaza Azteca, as with the recent restaurant closings last year of the Mexican Food Factory (Marlton) and Jose Tejas (Mt Laurel)… as well as Don Pablos a few years ago… it’s left a big void for delicious Mexican food served with amazing Margaritas.

If you were unfamiliar with Plaza Azteca, 42Freeway covered their Sicklerville opening back in 2015. This was at the very start of the 42Freeway website and I think Plaza Azteca was my very first invite to a free “friends and family” dinner!

Plaza Azteca features a true Mexican dining experience in a beautiful setting, including a full bar. So many signature dishes and cocktails but one aspect that people always talk about is their “table side guacamole” where a dedicated staff member wheels a car over to your table and makes your guacamole fresh for you… right in front of your eyes!

Today the restaurant group has over 50 locations with over 20 of them in Pennsylvania! Who knew?!

I also want to mention that today is Cinco de Mayo and Plaza Azteca Sicklerville is having a large Cinco de Mayo celebration…  large tents are set up out front and they will be featuring delicious Mexican food, refreshing beers, delicious margaritas, music and lot of festive and fun times!

Plaza Azteca Sicklerville – Cinco de Mayo!

Plaza Azteca Sicklerville has moved to a new Facebook page so be sure to follow them there!

It’s too early in the process for opening dates but we’ll update as we learn more. Keep reading below for more on the two locations.

Plaza Azteca Voorhees

As mentioned, directly on the Plaza Azteca main website, under New Jersey they list Voorhees as Coming Soon!

The address leads to the Boulevard at Voorhees Town Center which is the Main Street style development next to the “Echelon” Mall. The Boulevard section is also home to Iron Hill Brewery and Rodizio Grill.

Previously Catelli Duo wine bar and restaurant operated there also, but never reopened after pandemic closures.

So my instinct tells me that Plaza Azteca will be taking over the Catelli Duo location… it makes obvious sense as it’s already set up as a restaurant, with a kitchen and outdoor patio space.

That being said each of the buildings in the development has a distinct address and Plaza Azteca is showing the address is 10,000… when Catelli Duo was actually in the 12,000 building. The 10,000 building is a closed large gym.

So I’ve noticed some online leasing materials for the entire complex which lists the single address of the full complex as 10,000… so I bet that’s where this temporary address confusion comes into play.

I would expect Plaza Azteca is taking over the former Catelli Duo restaurant location.

I stopped over last week and looked in the windows of Catelli Duo…  it’s like a scene out of a movie after all the residents have vacated town abruptly, with everything left in the restaurant as was when the restaurant was fully operating… employees went home one day in 2020 likely expecting to be back in just a few days!

So it seems soon the space will be reopening with a Mexican vibe!

Plaza Azteca Marlton

Plaza Azteca is also moving into Marlton, taking over a location which previously was Bertucci’s.

Neil from the a View from Evesham Facebook page has been on top of this story, as he was the first to report in early December of 2022 that Bertucci’s had closed. (Facebook Post)

Recently Neil had also discovered that Plaza Azteca had created a new LLC tied to the Bertucci’s location, where it clearly identifies “Ownership and Operation of Restaurant and Bar”.

This was a short time ago and Neil chose at the time to wait for additional corroborating evidence.

So my visit this week at the Sicklerville location and chatting with management confirms what Neil found…  if it’s not clear, he and I have been working together on this story!

As a side note, if I am very honest that Neil is doing such an amazing job in the Marlton area, he’s the reason why you don’t see many post from me out there!   I can’t hang with the King of Marlton!

The location for Bertucci’s and the upcoming Plaza Azteca is on Route 73 somewhat close to the former Marlton circle.

The building sits at the front of an office building parking lot. Mission BBQ is open on the other side of the parking lot.

Across Route 70 (and over just a little bit) is the Bonefish Grill and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse

The upcoming Plaza Azteca Marlton is also about a 1.25 miles from the closed Jose Tejas. Jose Tejas lasted one year at their location.

As we learn more… we’ll share more!
