The Wegmans Supermarket Property in Washington Township Gloucester County (Video)

“We need a Wegmans”

“We don’t need another Wawa, we need a Wegmans”

“Why can’t we get a Wegmans, or Trader Joe’s, or Whole Foods?”

Almost every single post I write, someone comments in the facebook page something along the lines of the comments above.   Every.  Time.  Over in Deptford people would be happy with any new supermarket, but for all, the prized jewel would be a Wegmans Supermarket, followed by Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.

Well, many know this… that Wegmans was slated to build in Washington Township 15 years ago, at the same time they were planning the Cherry Hill store (and soon after, the Mt Laurel store).   While discussed in the same breadth, the other two were built but not Turnersville.

15 years later they still own the land that they paid $4.6 MILLION for!

I tried to find out the details of what happened.  I reached out to Wegmans, who gave a very generic “we moved on to other opportunities” reply.  I reached out to local politicians.  And I can’t get any details as to why this didn’t happen.

But here is a short 4 minute video on the Wegmans Supermarket Property, Washington Township.

The Map below shows the Wegmans 30 acres.  The yellow X in the lower loft is where I was standing when I took the video.

  1. I have been a property owner for 40 years. I remember when Wegmans was going to build. I think the discussion at that time was people wanted a town center. The did not think it would fit in. Also there was talk about tax abatements and that didn’t please some people. I think Jerry Luongo was mayor at the time. Check the archives of the Courier Post and the Gloucester County Times. You could also check into the old minutes from the planning board and township meetings.

    • I did check the archives to the extent of looking online. IT seems they don’t go back that far any longer (online). I do remember finding some before… I’ve been meaning to post something on this property for a few years. I think the township site was redone.. maybe they didn’t bring over all of the old docs.
I’m happy with the information I have presented.

  2. What’s happening with Seven Stars restaurant? Been closed for at least a week for electrical repairs. Rumor is a super WaWa is heading there.

  3. Sorry guys. I hate to sound doom and gloom but truth be told, businesses other than:

    Fitness centers
    Thrift stores
    Mexican food
    Asian take out
    Nail salons
    Vape stores
    Fitness centers
    Tattoo & Piercing parlors
    Nail Salons
    Dollar TreeFamilyGeneral’s
    dime-a-dozen low-end pizza/anything else joints
    Fitness centers
    Nail Salons
    Dunkin Dog-nuts
    McDoctor’s (Urgent Care’s)
    Fitness centers
    CVS’s & Walgreens’s
    Nail Salons

don’t seem to thrive so don’t expect Deptford and the surrounding areas to get anything remotely higher-end. Ever.
We may feel we’re entitled to better, but the powers that be who ultimately decide what goes where are always saying naynay to our areas, and it seems like they always will.
Granted, they do have their reasons. But it’s the good people here who have to suffer.
Maybe I’ll be proven wrong sometime down the line, but I doubt it.

I think we have a better chance seeing a Six-Flags opening in Woolwich Twp.

  4. I was told that wegman’s wanted a liquor license in Washing twp,and the bars and liquor stores fought them . They voted to not give Wegman’s a license so Wegman’s bailed out of building a store there without being able to sell liquor. That is what I heard anyways.
