Sherry’s Kitchen African restaurant and catering opened this weekend in Washington Township on the Black Horse Pike. I stopped in to check out the all new restaurant and grab some lunch. 42Freeway first wrote about Sherry’s coming about a month ago.
Sherry’s is located in a small multi-unit building on the southbound side of the Black Horse Pike… right before you reach Wendy’s and Cross Keys Rd. The building also is home to a Dunkin store.
I first stopped in during the week and briefly chatted with Sherry and her daughter Victoria, who at the time were busy finishing up the final restaurant preparation.
I stopped back in on Saturday for the Grand Opening and found a very busy restaurant filled with friends, family and locals interested in trying the new Western African restaurant. I even made it into their Instagram photo post “there’s that 42Freeway guy again!”
I was very happy to see so many people in the restaurant… But that meant I didn’t really have an opportunity to ask questions of Victoria or Sherry as the restaurant was “Jumping!” and they were working hard keep the orders flowing to the happy customers.
That being said Sherry, Victoria and the entire staff were just wonderful… doing a great job managing that opening day crowd.
This is an all-new build out for the restaurant space which features about 10 tables of four chairs. Sherry’s also supports takeout… as well as catering.
Sherry’s Kitchen Menu
Sherry’s offers their menu online via an in-store QR code which leads to this link.
The menu features homemade recipes from Africa (Nigeria in particular, it seems) with key ingredients featuring chicken, beef, goat, fish, snails, beans, yams, potatoes and other vegetables.
I have to be up front and say I literally have no experience in Nigerian cuisine and during my visit I only tried one rice based dish “Chicken Jollof Rice”… so I don’t really feel qualified to give anyone a recommendation on what to order!
My Jollof Rice made for a filling lunch.. rice cooked in a zesty tomato sauce with spices and herbs added.
I will mention that traditional Nigerian chicken dishes use an older hen (“hard chicken”) which while still flavorful typically has a tougher texture/chew to it than what most North Americans are used to. (9jafoodie)
I also ordered Puff-Puff which is a Nigerian donut hole dessert. Airy and sweet, it’s a nice snack dessert bite.
Dishes are in categories of small chops (appetizers), soups, special dishes, stews and sides.
Other examples on the menu include Giz-Dodo which is salted gizzard and plantains infused with herbs and Peppers. Asun is grilled goat meat sauteed with spicy habanero.
Their Ewa Agoyin is a sauteed fried fish dish served with dodo (plantain). Nigerian brown beans served with ground pepper sauce is also part of the dish.
Several Stew options offer options of sides and protein. An Ogbono stew for example is made from African mango tree seeds, and you can add your own
