Yesterday, Inspira Health Systems held their Groundbreaking Ceremony for their large expansion of the Mullica Hill hospital.
The $240 million investment will add 168,000 square feet to the campus with a signature element being the new 150,000 square foot five-story wing at the rear of the hospital. Additionally a front overbuild to the right of the hospital’s main entrance will be developed, as well as renovations of several key spaces on the 1st floor and expanded parking capacity.
Most who are reading this are likely thinking… “Didn’t that hospital just open a few years ago?”. Well in fact it is less than five years old!
At the groundbreaking ceremony Inspira CEO Amy Mansue stated that the Mullica Hill Hospital was designed for a capacity of 220 beds with the expectation of an initial 50% capacity… yet even after the pandemic demands have subsided, they still frequently find they are typically utilizing over 200 beds a day.
And with growth in demand for key services, planned service expansion in cancer care and other areas, as well as residential development growth in the surrounding communities… it was clear to Inspira that it was already time for a hospital expansion.
According to Inspira, services that will be expanded and enhanced on the campus include the Intensive Care Unit, Medical/Surgical, Maternal Child Health, Observation, Imaging (MRI and CT), Interventional Radiology, and Graduate Medical Education (including a simulation lab for hospital residents).
In the presentation speech, the demand for all aspects of maternity care were called out in the presentation and those areas will see upgrades and expansion.
The project will create 500 jobs for tradespersons during the construction phase. Once open, over 100 new permanent positions will become available within the hospital.
The project is split into two phases with the first phase focused on developing the large new wing and the overbuild that will expand maternity services. To support the growth in the size of the building and capacity, the expanded parking lot is also in the first phase.
Renovations of the existing spaces will begin in the fall of 2026.
The core development of the large edition is targeted to open in the First Quarter of 2027, which is just a little more than two years away.
Inspira is seeing growth in many areas of it’s South Jersey facilities, but Gloucester County in particular has several very significant new Inspira efforts under development or very recently opened.
This groundbreaking event takes place just months after Inspira opened their new 80,000 square foot Health Center in Deptford… which was an amazing transformation of a former retail store (Dick’s Sporting Goods) into a beautiful two-story hitech health care facility.
Additionally, another all new construction building will soon be opening in Woodbury. Developed next to the former “Underwood” hospital, the new building will be home to the Satellite Emergency Room and Behavioral Health Units.
Still to come is an expected redevelopment of the former Woodbury “Underwood” Hospital building.
On hand for the Mullica Hill groundbreaking were several members of the Inspira Health Executive Management Team, Community Leaders, as well as elected officials from the Congressional, County and Local levels.
The Congressional District for Gloucester County is split between Congressmen Norcross and Van Drew who were both on hand to celebrate the groundbreaking. Despite being members of different parties, the Congressman together presented an award to Inspira, and stood next to each other for a portion of the ceremonial “first shovel in the ground”… with both recognizing the incredible value that Inspira Mullica Hill brings to Gloucester County and South Jersey.
