A new Dollar Tree retail store is planned for Mullica Hill (Harrison Township), to take over a space which most recently was home to Rite Aid, adjacent to the popular Mullica Hill Amish Farmers Market.
Dollar Tree is a discount variety store with over 15,000 locations. The product mix includes groceries, household goods, personal care, seasonal and more. Originally selling all items for one dollar, they have since increased the core price to $1.25, and added additional higher priced items.
In October of last year 42Freeway wrote about the planned closing of the Mullica Hill Rite Aid store, with the store closing soon after the article went online. That Rite Aid location closing was part of a massive Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring effort for the well-known pharmacy. (Rite Aid has since exited bankruptcy and is moving forward as a privately owned company)
The new Dollar Tree store is a good sign for the retail strength of the area (and the shopping center), that in less than one year of the space being vacant, a new tenant has signed.
News of the Dollar Tree signing came from contacts in the real estate industry, which then led me to locating construction documents for the project. The project is currently “out to bid” (looking for contractors) to handle the conversion of the space to Dollar Tree.
The former Rite Aid store was 8,400 square feet and the Dollar Tree will be taking over the entire space, with minimal changes to the exterior other than likely signage.
Documents seen by 42Freeway show a interior layout configuration for Dollar Tree similar to the Rite Aid store, with the checkouts on the left (where the entrance is) and shelving running “left to right” in the store.
I do not have a timeline on the opening but likely not this year (can you believe it’s mid-November already?!), so probably the earliest we’ll see is first quarter 2025.
Honestly, these retrofit stores typically come together very quickly with the largest delays usually just in permitting and approvals. Remodeling work is minimal typically, Dollar Tree has so many stores and large warehouses… the merchandise needed for a new store opening is readily available.
The shopping center for the new Dollar Tree is officially known as the Mullica Hill Shopping Village, but everyone just knows it as the “Mullica Hill Amish Farmers Market” shopping center.
The shopping center is a prime location where Swedesboro Road (Route 322) and Main Street (Route 45) meet, just a half-mile north of the Mullica Hill’s historic downtown. The Mullica Hill Bypass roadway also starts at this intersection.
Another popular landmark for the shopping center is the Harrison House Restaurant/Diner, which is located at the front corner of parking lot where the busy roadway intersection is located.
Dollar Tree
Dollar Tree is a Chesapeake VA based Fortune 500 company which operates 15,000 stores throughout the 48th the United States and Canada. They also own the Family Dollar stores.
They operate in the dollar store and lower-priced retail categories, stocking a variety of items including health and beauty, food and snacks, party, seasonal decor, household interiors and more.
While some folks may complain about Dollar Tree when they plan to open in their neighborhood, the reality is Dollar Tree is a very popular shopping destination… bargains can be found.
My wife had stumbled on to their fabric stain remover and just this week I used it remove a chocolate ice cream stain on my shirt… Literally was the best stain remover product I’ve used, and at $1.25 for 10 sheets, it was a well spent 12 and a half cents!
Dollar Tree has been on an aggressive growth campaign in the last few years… adding 10,000 stores in the last 14 years, and I’ve covered many new South Jersey stores including the Gibbstown store which opened earlier this year.
That being said their “Year-to-date” stock price is down 50% and is the lowest it’s been over the last five years. Two weeks ago the Dollar Tree CEO Rick Dreiling abruptly stepped down, citing personal reasons related to health challenges.
