Interior demolition started today at the site of a closed Boston Market in Washington Township, signaling the start of the effort to remodel the building into a Chipotle restaurant.
The building for this upcoming Chipotle sits in front of the large At-Home store on the Black Horse Pike, and sits opposite a Verizon Store.

Chipotle is a Tex-mex quick casual restaurant chain offering burritos, tacos and bowls… using ingredients that are freshly prepared in the restaurant’s open kitchen, including the grilling of the chicken and beef as well as chopping all of the fresh vegetables.
42Freeway first wrote about the plans for Chipotle back in June of 2024, but there had been no movement for the last six months as Chipotle and their developers worked through final design requirements and approvals.
Since this is a rebuild of an existing building (and an approved use), there was no need for any Planning or Zoning Board hearings.

Last week a porta-potty showed up at the Blackwood/Turnersville building signaling work was to start soon… and today a large dumpster arrived, with demo crews quickly starting the effort to remove the building interior, ahead of the interior construction build out.
While I don’t have any specific details on the timing of the conversion effort, you would think this should be one of their quicker projects as the existing Boston Market building already very closely mimics the blocky rectangular design of most Chipotles.
One change we may see in the building is that while this Boston Market building does have windows on three sides, Chipotle typically uses a larger full-wall window for their stores. Well we will likely see for certain, soon enough.

This would be the second Chipotle for Washington Township, with a popular location opened on Egg Harbor Road (Acme Center) back in 2020. About a year later a First Watch brunch restaurant moved in next to that Egg Harbor Road Chipotle.
Chipotle has been on a long-running expansion effort throughout South Jersey for the last few years. I’ve covered new locations in; Barrington (2024), Mount Laurel (2024), Vineland (2024), Blackwood-Clementon (2022), Brooklawn (2023), Bellmawr (2021), Glassboro (2020), Cherry Hill (2020)… and likely many more that I’ve missed!
Chipotle has developed a large and loyal following of customers who appreciated the fresh and flavorful food which is prepared in front of the customers… in an “assembly line” fashion front counter where the order moves down to different stations, and customers can pick the ingredients… creating their own special recipe.

As mentioned, this Black Horse Pike free-standing building was previously home to a Boston Market location, and in fact the signage still is up on the building today.
Another more temporary sign hanging on the inside glass (as of my visit last week) was the eviction notice for Boston Market, who had closed that location sometime in early 2024.
Long time area residents will remember that before Boston Chicken/Market took over the building it was a Roy Rogers (and then likely originally a Gino’s Hamburger restaurant before that… help me out on that detail Washington Township!)
