Charley’s Cheesesteaks & Wings is coming to Lawnside New Jersey, taking over a building on the White Horse Pike which most recently was home to Church’s Chicken.
Construction crews arrived on at the site this week and quickly removed the Church’s aspects, and painted the exterior of the building in a gray and red design scheme.
Additionally construction crews have been working on the inside of the building doing demolition work ahead of the conversion into a Charley’s Cheesesteaks… which also features wings, fries, shakes and more.
The location for this new quick casual restaurant is in the Historic Lawnside Village Shopping center which is also home to Shop Rite. Many will remember when K-Mart was in the adjacent building. A large portion of that K-Mart building is now home to Lomax flooring.
Charley’s Cheesesteaks – Founded in Ohio
If you’re unfamiliar with Charley’s Cheesesteaks, they are a national franchise chain of over 600 Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches, also offering wings and shakes. They were founded 39 years ago in Columbus OH, when a Ohio State University student visited Philadelphia and tried the cheese steaks and felt they needed to be shared with the country.
Locally you can find Charley’s Cheesesteaks in the food courts of the malls in Deptford, Cherry Hill, and Moorestown.
The Deptford Mall location was the most recent location in the area to open, which was back in September of 2022.
I had actually heard several months ago that Charley’s was in line for the Lawnside building, but for some reason there was a delay in filing for the permits so I was holding off on writing about it.
Today I’ve been able to confirm the plans with the leasing company, local officials, the permit hanging in the window… and this afternoon I stopped into the Deptford Mall for a Charley’s cheesesteak lunch and chatted with the local employees about the upcoming White Horse Pike location.
For my lunch today I went with a “Chicken Philly” which features all white meat chicken breast, onions, mushrooms, green peppers and provolone cheese. I opted not to go with the lettuce, tomato and Mayo.
It’s a decent cheesesteak and solved the hunger pains for this hungry blogger… but with the Philadelphia and South Jersey areas having serious competition in the category, Charley’s may not be in your top 5, but there is a place for them.
Bigtime “props” though for carrying Kraft Cheez Wiz for that original Philly Cheesesteak taste… which many shops do not offer.
So I don’t have details directly from the ownership in regards to when they’re planning on opening, I would expect to see them opening later in the summer and I have to believe before the year is out.
