Celebrity pizza reviewer and sports website owner Dave Portnoy has the influence to change the lives of small restaurant owners… and today he stopped in at Slice “For The Love of Pizza” in Washington Township (Gloucester County) for one of his signature one-bite pizza reviews.
It is unknown to 42Freeway if he visited other pizza shops in the area (as is normally the case), but it does appear that he was in Philadelphia and may have shot over the bridge just to try a single pizza shop.

In recent years Dave has reviewed several South Jersey pizza shops in Burlington and Camden County, and the Jersey Shore… but this is the first time he’s popped up in Gloucester County.
Slice Pizza is located in the Tower Square Shopping Center near the Five-Points intersection (where the Village Pub is also located).
Open for over 12 years in Washington Twp, Slice features only all natural/organic ingredients at both their Washington Township and Philadelphia locations. They also look to source products locally every day to ensure freshness and their award-winning dough is prepared fresh every morning
Dave Portnoy originally started out creating the Barstool Sports publication in 2003 which grew into several cities and switched it’s focus to websites. Barstool generated significant revenue from podcasts, advertising and merchandise sales.
In 2020, he sold 36% of the company for approximately $150 million (cash and stock), making Dave a multi-millionaire.
While this was big national news at the time, what really put Dave’s brand and face into American households was his One-Bite Pizza Reviews which are shared to social media (YouTube)
Simply… Dave shows up at random pizza shops unannounced, ordering a full fresh pizza… then stands in front of the shop as one of his associates records his off-the-cuff review.
There’s a certain style that Dave prefers for his pizza, preferring a crispy bottom crust which when held up at the back crust of the slice can still stand up at a horizontal “no-flop” manner.
A scale of 1 to 10 is used and to his credit, Dave really protects the value of the higher scores, so that even a score in the Sevens is considered very good, the eights are astronomical, and if you can get into the Nines with the Dave Portnoy score… you’ve entered elite company.
If your pizza shop is fortunate enough to get one of those higher scores, it immediately changes your life starting the next day as customers flock in to try your pizza. Honestly just having Dave show up at your shop is a huge boost to your customer traffic and sales.
Additionally, he has been known to review other sandwiches particularly when in the Philadelphia area he will try cheesesteaks.
In the South Jersey area he’s reviewed several pizza shops including Lilo’s in Hainesport where he gave them a very high 8.4 score for pizza, and then an even higher score for their cheesesteaks.
Finally to the point, for Slice in Washington Township a clip is floating around Facebook with Dave standing in front of the restaurant holding a box of freshly baked pizza… just as he has completed his pizza “bite” and commentary and gives his score.
