76 Gas Station – Hurffville Road Deptford

42Freeway first wrote about the all-new construction 76 brand gas station going up on Hurffville Road and Good Intent Road back in June of this year.

The location for the property is across the street from  Ice Cream LoveNonnas Pizza, and Heritage’s convenience store.

The site was previously also a gas station, but with the updated design the new gas station will support more pumps, as well as an upgraded convenience store building.

The increased gas pump capacity and more customer friendly convenience store should generate more revenue for the owners as well as a provide a better customer experience.

I stopped in today to see that basically everything looks complete, with of all the pumps and signage in place.  I did not look inside the convenience store area.

I caught up with the owner who was on site at the time and he stated the opening would be ”in about a week.  Early November”

The key change with the new design was to rebuild the convenience store building further to the back of the property, allowing more space in the core property up front. This additional space now supports two rows of two pumps (4 total).  With gas nozzles on both sides of each pump, they effectively can support 8 vehicles at one time.

Additionally there’s a third islands of pumps for diesel fuel.

The convenience store aspect was redeveloped as a modern and more welcoming store, that will likely see more regular use from gas patrons

A new convenience store building for the 76 Gas Station which opens soon.

I believe the prior gas station building also had some aspects of a convenience store located in the space that was originally the service station office… but I would believe that with the new design those retail sales numbers would increase significantly.

The Gas station previously offer propane tank refills, and I didn’t notice a new propane installation when I was there.

Deptford Speedway Gas Station Closed

Just one mile away up Route 41 closer to the mall, the Speedway gas station surprisingly closed a few days ago.

In just a few days they sold the store merchandise at steep discounts, and today the Speedway gas station and store are both completely closed.

Many weren’t aware of this but Speedway was purchased by the 7/11 convenience store brand back in 2005. The holding company for the brands is Japanese based and their stocks trade on the Tokyo stock exchange.

While exact specifics on the Deptford location closing are not available, in their most recent quarterly Investors Earnings call which was held held earlier this month, the company stated they would close 444 underperforming locations across the United States and Canada. (USA Today)

Sign announcing that the Speedway Gas Station on Hurffville Road Deptford has closed

This is a relatively small number stores in comparison to the 13,000 stores that the company has in USA and Canada… unfortunately for Deptford (and their employees), our Deptford Speedway made the closing list.

The closing isn’t overly surprising when you consider that in the one mile stretch there are four service stations and you’ll wonder if there’s just enough business to keep all of them fully operating.
