According to the location page of the Roy Rogers fast food restaurant website, a new location is coming to Cherry Hill NJ taking over the former PDQ restaurant location.
News of this location was first reported at the popular South Jersey Food Scene Group, when a follower noticed the location was added to the Roy Rogers location page. Marilyn from SJFS spoke to a Roy Rogers representative who gave additional details.
As mentioned the address given for Roy Rogers is the former PDQ chicken restaurant which closed in November. That location is on Haddonfield Road in Cherry Hill.
If you’re unfamiliar with Roy Rogers they are a fast food restaurant with a focus on burgers and roast beef sandwiches… Including my favorite the Double-R bar burger which it is a burger with fresh ham on top
“Roy’s” also offers delicious fried chicken, shakes… and even breakfast!
The older generation realizes why I have this memory and experience with Roy Rogers…
Roy Rogers was a popular hamburger restaurant in the 1970s and 80s, with locations throughout the South Jersey area. When I was a child they were actually more popular in my household than McDonald’s or Burger King, partially because we lived a few blocks away from the Brooklawn location.
Roy Rogers grew quickly through the area by taking over locations which were originally developed as Gino’s burger restaurants (home of the Gino’s Giant!)
Many of those Gino’s/Roy Rogers restaurant buildings are still around today! Some were converted into Boston Markets (Deptford, Turnersville). Other individual locations went on to become other restaurants such as the Black Horse Diner in Mount Ephraim, or the Dairy Queen in Turnersville… which is probably the most pure version of the building remaining in the area.
Roy Rogers basically disappeared in our area for several decades except for a couple locations that oddly still remained on the New Jersey Turnpike (although since closed)!
The brand was brought back in 2002 when the sons of a former Roy Rogers franchisee reached out to Hardee’s (who owned the brand) and purchased the Roy Rogers restaurant brand to bring it back to life again.
Currently there are about 40 locations in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and two open locations in New Jersey.
There isn’t a lot of details on this planned Cherry Hill location… there has been no press release announcement of a new franchise signee, and Roy Rogers is not answering any questions at this time.
This is breaking news so I only had time for the basics.. more to come!
