South Jersey’s second Plaza Azteca Mexican restaurant opened in Marlton on Route 73 about 2 weeks ago, offering their delicious Mexican cuisine as well as a full bar featuring their signature margaritas and more.
I stopped in on Friday with my daughter to check the new location out… And while we did not order a full meal, we did dive into the OMG Nachos as well as 2 drinks including their amazing Margarita.
This is the second South Jersey location for Plaza Azteca, with their first opened in Sicklerville (Cross Keys Road) back in 2015. Plans for a third area location in Voorhees NJ were previously announced (before Marlton), but the Voorhees location will not be happening.
Back in May of this year 42Freeway in partnership with popular Facebook Page “A View From Evesham” first brought news of this new Plaza Azteca Marlton location.
The Marlton building was previously home to Bertucci’s which closed in 2022. It’s location is along Route 73, positioned in the front parking lot of 5 Greentree Center Office Building. There is a second building in the parking lot, which is home to Mission BBQ.
I’d say the property is about a 1/2 mile from the busy Route 70 and 73 “Marlton Circle” interchange. In the immediate area are Bonefish Grill, Flemings Prime Steakhouse, Oga’s Diner and more.
For the new Plaza Azteca restaurant it’s a beautiful rebuild of the square building with the bar positioned along the right wall, and the remaining space available to the dining room.
While there is a low height partition wall between the bar area and dining room, it is effectively one large open room.
The dining space features comfortable booths with high backed cushioned seats around the perimeter. The main dining room floor offers traditional table seating.
The bar (which is on the right side) seats probably 25 customers and features a center wooden refrigerator cabinet for ice cold bottle beers. As you would expect Tequila is a big part of the Plaza Azteca menu and they feature a large variety of options.
The decor carries a Mexican theme but it’s not overdone. Uniquely beautiful custom lamps add to the Mexican redesign, as well as calming greenery hanging from overhead planters.
For our visit we sat at the bar and at around 1pm it was very busy with a late lunch crowd. We had to squeeze in for the last two available seats. By the time we left about an hour later we were in the mid-afternoon phase and there were plenty of seats available.
I went with a classic Plaza Azteca House Margarita which features El Toro tequila, fresh orange juice, fresh lime and agave.
The OMG Nachos are prepared as loaded-up individual nacho chips, so that each byte is getting all of the flavors of the dish. Ingredients include chicken, chorizo, applewood bacon and topped with refried beans, pico de Gallo, sour cream, guacamole, and pickled jalapenos.
They were very flavorful nachos and I appreciate the individual preparation of each chip being loaded with so much delicious ingredients. You may find it easier to put it on a plate and cut with a fork!
Their delicious food and creative drinks will absolutely make the new Plaza Azteca in Marlton a popular dining destination in the area… but when you factor in the recent closings of the nearby Mexican Food Factory and Jose Tejas… well I bet this new Mexican spot will be an even more popular eatery!
