Federal Donuts & Chicken has opened their first New Jersey location… in Marlton.
While technically listed as a “soft-opening” (official opening is Fri Apr 26th ), Federal Donuts Marlton is operating a full 7am-7pm schedule (but closing Easter Sunday at 3pm)
The Burlington County location is located in the popular Marlton Square shopping center on Route 73 (Trader Joe’s)
Federal Donuts & Chicken is a Philadelphia based restaurant brand which started in 2011. Founded by 5 friends including James Beard Award Winning restauranteur Chef Michael Solomonov as well as Steve Cook, Federal Donuts & Chicken offers freshly made premium quality donuts, fried chicken and coffee.
While focusing on a small menu and offering high-quality preparation is not a unique thing… the paring of donuts and chicken was a one-of-a-kind menu choice when first developed almost 15 years ago.
Federal Donuts & Chicken also prides itself on their warm hospitality and a deep commitment to the community.
When first opened in 2011, Federal Donuts & Chicken took the Philadelphia foodie-scene by storm with customers eagerly waiting in long lines at their initial locations.
In November 2012, famed Philadelphia Inquirer restaurant critic Craig LaBan gave them high marks particularly the “fresh fried doughnuts which were perfectly light” as well as “the more elaborate, pre-glazed fancy doughnuts which were already in fine form from the start” (Inquirer)
A 2015 article in Eater.com credited Federal Donuts with turning Philly into a fried chicken destination. “The high caliber of both the chicken and the doughnuts has secured Federal Donuts its long-held place on the Eater Philly 38.”
In that article they quoted chef Michael Solomonov as saying “we only serve three things and they have to be perfect. It has to be right every single time, and we make thousands a day”

I was excited to be invited to the preview event where on my way in I caught up with franchise co-owner mark who along with business partner Debbie are incredibly excited to be opening the restaurant in Marlton… the first in New Jersey.
Unfortunately for me my schedule could only afford me a few moments to visit… but I will be back this week!
As mentioned, inside customers will find a bright and modern looking restaurant with base white tone to the design with splashes of red.
Overall it’s not a large unit but there is seating for about two dozen in a mixture of square 4-seat tables as well as few larger table options.
I have tried Federal Donuts at their Philadelphia locations… Donuts are light and sweet (not overly sweet) and a chicken sandwich I ate at the Ben Franklin Parkway location had a pleasant light “cunchiness” to the fried chicken coating, and a moist and delicious chicken interior… everything i’ve tried is delicious!
I plan on stopping back to Marlton this week when I have more time for a focused experience of what makes Federal Donuts & Chicken in Marlton unique, awesome and delicious!
