Deptford’s Viet Pho is Pho-nomenal

Last week my wife and I took two of her sisters along for our first visit to the recently opened Viet Pho in Deptford NJ, which is in the Almonesson Rd Shopping Center where Ross, Burlington, and Hobby Lobby are located.

If you aren’t familiar, “pho”  (pronounced “fuh”) is a Vietnamese soup made with rice noodles in a beef based broth, and can include other ingredients such as beef or chicken pieces.  It is seasoned with fresh herbs like cilantro and basil, and typically the diner is offered a variety of additional ingredients to customize.

Pho is “all the rage” the last few years, with one of the area’s first offerings being available at Bo Ne over in Woodbury (near Underwood Hospital).

My wife and I have had pho from several restaurants, her one Sister has had it in Memphis and North Jersey, and my wife’s oldest sister had never heard of it, let alone try it.  So we had a wide representation of pho experience for our dinner last weekend at Viet Pho.

I’m not a reviewer… so the short summary is, everyone gave it a thumbs-up.  Large bowls of pho for only $7.99.  We also had excellent dumpling appetizers, with very fast and friendly service.

The restaurant is new with stylings well above those of a strip mall asian restaurant, but definitely very casual.  The eatery is on the small side… thin in fact.  It was somewhat busy during our visit but we still felt very comfortable.

In summary; if you are a regular eater of pho you will find Viet Pho to be a great addition to your restaurant round-up, and if you are completely new to it…  Viet Pho’s friendly and fast service is a great “first time” place to visit as they will take time to explain the ins and outs of Pho as well as provide excellent service.

While you are there, check out the new Kirkland’s store which is one store away.  The expanded Party City is next door.  Hobby Lobby is 50 yds away.  Ross is very close.  Pier One and Burlington all walk-able.   Shoppers would find it easy to make an afternoon out of this shopping center!

  1. My wife and I frequent Pho Huong Viet (Evesham Road, Voorhees, in front of Tir Na Nog) and Pho Le (73 in Berlin, next to Sundae’s Ice Cream).

We’ve passed this place a few times a month but each time we’ve either had something else to do, or it was after 8pm, which is when they close.

One of the main questions I get asked when I tell someone about Pho: “Why would I pay 8-10 dollars for a bowl of soup?”

Well, you’re not getting a “bowl”. You’re getting half of a bowling ball’s worth of soup. The bowl could be used as a helmet, they’re so big. (Not recommended to try; not a suggestion of safety equipment.)

It’s like the Asian version of Chicken Noodle Soup, but somehow “lighter” and more savory at the same time.

Darnit, Mark. Now I want Pho for lunch. And it’s not even 8am. (Fun fact: In Vietnam, Pho is often served as breakfast.)
